These were just what I needed to update an old metal folding chair with plastic leg stoppers. Glide now without scratching floor.

I have been searching for decent, long-term floor glides for our dining room chairs for several months. We’ve used the adhesive kind for years, but they invariably slide off after awhile, or the corner that touches the floor gets worn down to nothing. Yes, the chair legs are angled. So I recently decided to start trying a few other types, hoping to find a really good one that would last for at least 6 months, preferably even longer. The other ones I’ve tried so far are all designed for non angled legs, so they have the same basic issue – the corner wears down way too quickly. Anyway, I tried some hammer-in kind on a couple chairs recently, only it’s not a single nail on them, it’s an open metal ring. Not too long, but they took so much hammering to get seated in our chair legs that the felt was basically smashed flat by the time I was done. I saw these swivel ones at the other day and was over -joyed! Finally, a long term solution for angled legs!! I drilled the optional pilot holes, and in the process of gently hammering them in with a rubber mallet, the embedded nails all popped through the felt pads. At first, I only seated them until the metal plate was touching the floor leg (so as to be kind to the felt pads), but with that approach all I could hear on the floor when moving the chair was 4 nails scraping the floor. Yep, that’s not going to work. Tried to set the nails in farther with a nail set but it kept slipping off the nail. So, I ended up hammering on the felt even more until the nails would not go in any farther. With nobody sitting in the chair they now sound pretty smooth, but as soon as I sit in the chair and slide it, I can hear a nail scraping on the floor, and I’m pretty light. I’m keeping them in for now but I have zero confidence that they’ll last long at all. If I end up being wrong about that I’ll come back and update this review!

I found these 3-M Scotch Felt Swivel Glides to be the best swivel glides for items with or without angled legs. The application was easy and comes with all you need to put them on. They came 4 in a pack, measuring 1 -1/8″ in a neutral beige shade. The glides are made to swivel with a unique design using upper and lower metal parts and the attached nail in the center of the felt pad which secures it nicely to a stool, chair, or other items. These gliding floor protector pads stay in place, not like my other adhesive type felt pads that moved out of place, fell off, and never layed flat. I love that the glides swivel nicely and remain flat while moving the stool in any direction. We use this stool for those places we can’t reach, such as smoke alarms, high cupboards, hard to reach windows, etc. Now I don’t have to worry about my beautiful hardwood floors scratching or denting. These also slide smoothly and prevent scratches or abrasions on other type floors such as vinyl. This product was given to me in exchange for an honest review. These felt swivel glides from 3-M Scotch are just perfect so I recommend them highly.

Made table wobble more

the nail did not nail in completely, leaving the nail head poking through the felt

I put these felt feet on most of my chairs. The felt is securely attached to the mail. They make it easier to slide the chairs on my hardwood floor with out scratching floor surface.

I can’t even express the disappointment I have with these! We trialed them on two chairs and within an hour had damage to our hardwood floors with like adult use! Also, one of them split the leg at the base causing damage to the chair. What DID work is removing the original plastic nail-in slides and adhering felt pads directly to the wood with a dab of super glue. So frustrating.

I volunteer to evaluate products for 3M, and the company recently sent me a free sample of these chair sliders. Working from home in the pandemic, I have a chair that wobbles and apparently has a slight case of polio (because one leg is shorter than the others) and I thought these would fix the problem. Unfortunately (why I had to subtract one star) they can only be used on wood or plastic legs (mine were made of steel). So, looking around I also had a barstool (made out of wood) that is so heavy it would not slide across the floor and was thus stuck at the counter. Flipping the stool over with a friend, I drilled pilot holes (strongly recommended because you could split the wood by just nailing the sliders on), and attached the sliders. Now the stool can be pushed fairly easily on the floor. These sliders are really quiet and seem to negate the weight of the barstool so that the friction with the floor is perfect. My only other concern is will the felt pads pick up dust and dirt (and as a result harden) over time? That remains to be determined, but I guess they could be replaced easily enough if that is the case. I like them!

These are designed to be used on straight cut chair legs which is a great idea, except that I found it impossible to nail them on without smashing the swivel mechanism.
